Opus Clip is the AI tool that's changed how creators think about YouTube Shorts. Instead of manually scrubbing through your long-form videos to find clip-worthy moments, Opus Clip watches your video, selects the most engaging 30 to 90-second segments, reformats them to vertical, adds captions, and schedules them to TikTok and YouTube Shorts โ€” automatically.

We used it for 90 days across two different channels to find out whether the automation holds up in real production.

What Opus Clip Does

At its core, Opus Clip solves one specific problem: you're producing long-form YouTube content and you're leaving reach on the table by not repurposing it as short-form. Most creators know they should be posting Shorts and Reels, but the manual process of identifying moments, cropping to vertical, adding captions, and scheduling across platforms takes 2 to 3 hours per video.

Opus Clip's AI handles all of that in about 10 minutes.

The workflow:

  1. Paste your YouTube video URL (or upload the file)
  2. Select clip length (15s, 30s, 45s, 60s, 90s)
  3. Wait 8 to 15 minutes
  4. Review the clips Opus Clip selected and ranked
  5. Edit captions or trim if needed
  6. Schedule or post directly to YouTube Shorts and TikTok

Clip Selection Quality

This is the most important question: does the AI find the good moments?

Our honest answer: yes, reliably. Not perfectly, but reliably.

Over 90 days, we ran 34 videos through Opus Clip. For each video, we also had a human editor manually select what they thought were the best clips. We then compared:

  • In 29 out of 34 videos, at least 2 of the AI's top 3 clips overlapped with the human editor's top 3 choices
  • In 8 videos, the AI found a clip that the human editor had missed, which ended up being the best performer
  • In 5 videos, the AI selections were noticeably weaker โ€” mostly in highly technical or slow-paced educational content

The AI is specifically trained to identify moments with high energy, strong hooks, quotable statements, and natural standalone narrative arcs. It performs best on talking-head content and interviews, and worst on screencast tutorials or slow educational explainers.

The Virality Score

Each clip gets a "Virality Score" between 0 and 100. Opus Clip explains that this score predicts how likely the clip is to perform well based on engagement signals.

Our results on the Virality Score: It's a useful ranking tool, not a reliable predictor. We found that Virality Score correlated with actual view count about 60% of the time โ€” better than random selection, but not dramatically so. Treat it as a rough quality signal, not as a promise.

One pattern we noticed: Virality Scores above 80 consistently performed better than clips under 60. The middle range (60 to 80) was where the score was least predictive.

Auto-Reframe Quality

Opus Clip automatically converts your 16:9 landscape video to 9:16 vertical by tracking the speaker and keeping them centred.

For talking-head content with one speaker: excellent. The tracking is smooth and the speaker stays centred even during animated gestures.

For content with multiple people, or where the camera cuts between different shots: variable. The AI handles most cuts correctly, but occasionally it lags on a sudden camera switch and you get 1 to 2 frames of a badly framed shot.

For screencasts or animated content: Opus Clip adds letterboxing (black bars) which looks acceptable but not ideal. A human editor would do better here.

Caption Quality

Auto-captions are included at all paid tiers. Accuracy is high for clear audio โ€” we measured approximately 97% accuracy on clean ElevenLabs voiceover, and 91 to 95% on human narration with some background noise.

The caption styling is customisable: you can choose from several preset styles (including the bold pop-up style popular on viral content) and adjust colours and position.

One limitation: caption editing requires clicking on individual words in a timeline, which is slower than it should be when you need to fix a batch of errors. A full-text editor for captions would make corrections much faster.

For a creator uploading one video per week, the Pro plan at $29/month makes the most sense. You get unlimited video processing, unlimited auto-posting, and brand kit to add your logo and colours to exported clips.

Is It Worth It?

The math is simple: if posting Shorts and Reels would take you 2 hours per video manually, and you post weekly, that's 8 hours per month on repurposing. At the Pro plan ($29/month), you're paying less than $4 per hour of work saved.

More importantly, you'll actually do it. Most creators don't repurpose consistently because the manual process is tedious. Opus Clip removes the friction, which means your long-form content starts working harder for your channel growth.

Verdict: The Pro plan at $29/month is one of the best value-for-money tools in the creator stack. If you're making long-form YouTube content and not repurposing it as Shorts, Opus Clip should be the next tool you try.
